Born 1982, Cape Town, South Africa.

John-Paul Rautio makes minimalist abstract drawings in chalk and charcoal on polygonal wood panels. The drawings recall scientific imagery: microscopic, astronomical, and rapatronic. Rautio's work is informed by Japanese enso paintings, although he trained his hand by studying traditional European figure drawing. His use of charcoal references prehistorical art. The shapes emerge as Rautio rubs charcoal into the wood surface. They are theoretical objects that exist on a number of levels - as 'figures', 'energies' and observations of the moment of their own creation.
